    Description

    Penn Antique Restoration
7' Antique SOLID Wood Round Tapered Structural Column
    (NOT HOLLOW)
HEAVY, antique, porch column salvaged from Northeastern, PA.  It's made  entirely of a solid hardwood (not hollow) and is painted a light blue. The  column is tapered and is wider at the bottom than at the top.
This column was originally installed in the corner of a porch and  had 2 handrails connected to it. We could fill those mortises with solid wood,  as well as make any other repairs or modifications. If you're interested, email  us with a description of what you'd like done to the column and we'll give you a  price.
A small portion of the bottom was chewed up by termites. The  damage was limited to only that part and there is no termite damage anywhere  else. A thin layer (~1") of the bottom could be cut to remove the damaged  portion.
Although it may look rough in the photos, the column is strong, sturdy, and in great shape considering it's  age. There are checks, nicks, scrapes, scratches from top to bottom, which will be  removed during sanding, and whatever remains could be filled with putty or left  as "character marks." Once painted, the column will look as good as new! There are no  serious, structural flaws like big breaks, deep cracks, rot, or  warp.
Considering that the wood used to make this column was sourced  from a tree that lived hundreds of years before being cut down; it's much  harder/denser and is less prone to rot, warp, insects, and even fire than any  column made today. Today's columns are made wood sourced from trees that are  barely 20 years old. The wood hasn't matured long enough, and the new column  will need to be replaced sooner than this old one--they don't make them like  they used to!
