ANTIQUE CARVED NEWEL POST 47" TALL ~ ARCHITECTURAL SALVAGE w/Topper 4ft.-10"OAH

Description

Exquisite vintage staircase starter newel, from a Midwest home. Due to the grain structure, hardness and weight, this item seems to be either oak or walnut, or a combination of those hardwoods, as it has reinforcement ribs running vertically inside the post. Newel alone weight 45# without the topper which is 14#. Overall height is approximately 4 ft. 10". 8" square at the top and 10" square at the bottom/base. All dimensions approximate. The notch in the topper is from another historic home, but it fit this newel and provides unique character. Staircase handrail relief on one side would line up with the topper notch (as pictured).
Just look at the detail. One of a kind now a days. Includes topper with round ball approximately 6" diameter shipped separate in its own box.
Vintage catalog picture attached. Enjoy the look back. My internet research has not found this exact newel or the maker. Pre-1900's.
